75 Years of Family Hospitality in the Heart of Vevey

Since 1950, the Ming family has embodied a hotel tradition in Vevey built on excellence, dedication, and innovation. On the occasion of its 75th anniversary, the Astra Hotel Vevey pays tribute to its roots while reaffirming its mission of offering contemporary hospitality in the heart of the Vaud Riviera.

A Dynasty of Hoteliers Rooted in Vevey
The story begins in 1950, when Josef Ming acquired the “Buffet de la Gare” and turned it into the Hôtel Pavillon, a modest 11-room establishment. A visionary, he laid the foundations for continuous growth, led by the next generations: Niklaus Ming and his wife Monique in the 1970s, and today, co-directors Christophe and Nicolas Ming, who share the same passion.

From Hôtel Pavillon to Astra Hotel Vevey
The site’s history dates back to the 19th century with the Hôtel de la Gare, later becoming the Pavillon des Voyageurs in 1912, and eventually the Hôtel Pavillon. In 2005, the hotel complex was renamed Astra Hotel Vevey, marking a new era with modern facilities, a wellness center, seminar rooms, and a diverse culinary offering – notably the iconic historical brasserie, La Coupole 1912.

Tradition in the Service of the Future
Firmly anchored in Vevey’s collective memory, the Ming family has always blended tradition with modernity. Preserving heritage – such as the 1927 Fête des Vignerons frescoes or stained glass by Michel Delanoë – while continuously innovating in services, defines the hotel’s philosophy.

A Culinary Journey Back in Time
To celebrate this jubilee, the historic Brasserie La Coupole 1912 will revive the flavors of the past. Starting September 1st, a traditional dish will be served each week from Monday to Friday, offering guests a delicious journey through the iconic recipes that have marked the hotel’s history. As a nod to past customs, the famous Sunday Roast will also make a comeback at lunchtime – a warm and convivial dish, perfect for sharing.

1950-2020 : The Ming Family celebrates its 70th anniversary on the Place de la Gare in Vevey!

A look back at the successful saga of an ambitious family

It was on April 1st 1950 that the first Ming put down his suitcases in Vevey. It was Josef Ming, born in Obwalden and from a hotel family, great-uncle of Nicolas and Christophe Ming – current directors of the Astra Hotel Vevey.

Already manager of a hotel in Crans-Montana, Josef Ming took over the Buffet de la Gare – also known as the “Pavillon des voyageurs” – and its seven guest rooms and renamed it “Hôtel Pavillon”.

In 1965, he handed over the management to his nephew Niklaus, who took over the management with his wife Monique in 1970. In 1972, the couple founded the company Gestion Hôtelière Ming SA, which was finally able to buy the establishment in 1980. They then undertook several renovations and expansions to arrive, in 1991, at a 32-room 4-star hotel, which was completed in 1993 with 20 studios with kitchenette. At the same time, the former “Hotel Touring et Gare”, previously owned by the Signorell family, was demolished. On the same square, the new central building of the Ming family’s hotel complex is erected, offering 30 additional rooms, the current reception, restaurant, conference rooms and roof terrace with wellness area. Its inauguration takes place at the right time, just before the 1999 Winegrowers’ Festival!

In 2005, the Ming brothers – already in the company since 1998 – took over the management of the Hotel Pavillon together, renaming it “Astra Hotel Vevey” and in turn enlarging it with 7 additional rooms and an outdoor jacuzzi to complete the Spa offer. Their efforts were rewarded as the hotel now has a 4-star Superior rating. But the improvement in terms of guest comfort continues: between 2015 and 2019, the 100 rooms, the Astra Lobby Bar & Lounge, the conference rooms as well as the historic Brasserie La Coupole 1912 will once again be rejuvenated! To be ready to welcome, this time, the visitors of the 2019 Winegrowers’ Festival!

In 2020, the Ming family is proud to celebrate its 70th anniversary on the Place de la Gare in Vevey and is looking forward to celebrating this jubilee with all its clients, partners and friends.

On this occasion, 70 vouchers worth CHF 100 are sold at CHF 70! Get some while they last!
